Relación de Texcoco, Instrucción y Memoria, Romances de los señores de la Nueva España, 1577-1582.

One volume contains three manuscripts, probably seventeenth-century copies of the originals. The first manuscript, "Relación q se enbio a su magestad" (filed as G57 Ms.), is a copy of the lost original of the "relación geográfica" of the city of Texcoco, Mexico, prepared by Juan Bautista Pomar in 1582 in response to a questionnaire sent by the Spanish Crown in 1577. A manuscript copy of the questionnaire "Ynstruccion y memoria de las relaciones que se an de a ser para la descripcion de las Yndias q su magd. manda aser para el buen gobierno y ennoblesimiento dellas" constitutes the second manuscript (filed as G58 Ms.). The relación de Texcoco constitutes a primary source of information on the city's Indian history and culture of the preconquest and sixteenth-century. (A nineteenth-century copy of the relación, published in Nueva colección de documentos para la historia de México, forms part of the Joaquín García Icazbalceta Manuscript Collection, which includes 42 original relaciones geográficas). The third manuscript, "Romances de los señores de la Nueva España" (filed as G59 Ms.), is a copy of Pomar's compilation of Nahuatl lyric poems or songs.
